UKHTC OpenThe United Kingdom Human Trafficking Centre (UKHTC) opened its doors on the 2 October 20006. This Government funded centre will assist police forces around the country to run their own operations by providing coordinated intelligence, victim care and legal advice. It will provide a checklist of requirements that police forces will need to consider during any operation. The centre will also devise and provide training for police officers investigating trafficking offences. CHASTE works with the UKHTC on issues relating to victim care and research. Visit the UKHTC website for information about this important new development in defeating trafficking. www.ukhtc.org

Supporting CHASTE has put you at the centre of inspiring the development of further provision of safe housing for those trafficked for sexual exploitation. Through the formation of a network of providers representing several UK Christian denominations the CHASTE Round Table has seen the Roman Catholic religious congregations through the Medaille Trust and the Salvation Army through the Jarrett community initiative supplying three new safe houses—a fantastic achievement.
This is an amazing contribution from churches which so many believe are on the decline in their influence in our society. Women who are trafficked for sexual exploitation do not always have recourse to public funds in order to have the safety they require provided for them. The Salvation Army and the Roman Catholic Religious Congregations have committed funds, personnel and support over the next two years: an extraordinary commitment to those who have been trafficked and are seeking a place of sanctuary and recovery. Thank you for your continued support of our work to raise the issues which need addressing in tackling trafficking.
Facilitating the role of churches in articulating the injustice of sex trafficking, developing supportive networks for victims, and challenging demand for commercial sex is an important aspect of our work. We have now started proactively networking churches across all denominations with the aim of equipping them with the knowledge they need to have a clear understanding of the issues, and to support them in developing the capability to intervene strategically as well as in very practical terms within their communities. We plan to roll this programme of networking across the country in the New Year and are currently recruiting for this role. In 2007 we shall be looking at the links between contemporary slavery in trafficking for Sexual Exploitation and the issues surrounding abolition of the Slave Trade which act was successfully passed in Westminster in 1807!
